Ripe Compressed Pu-erh Wheel

1. Historical Background

Compressed Puer tea originated on the ancient Tea Horse Road, where ancient people invented steaming and cake-pressing techniques to facilitate long-distance transport by horse caravans and save space. Modern ripe Puer fermentation (wet pile process) was developed in the 1970s. Through controlled artificial fermentation, it simulates the natural aging process that would otherwise take decades for raw Puer, producing a mellow, smooth, and aromatic liquor without the need for long-term aging. It is a classic Puer tea suitable for daily drinking year-round.

2. Origin & Tea Garden Information

  • Core Origin: Premium old-tree tea region along the Lancang River basin, Yunnan
  • Garden Altitude: 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level. The pristine ecological environment and long growth cycle produce a thick, full-bodied liquor with a long, mellow aftertaste.

3. Plucking Standards

  • Plucking Season: Premium harvests in April (spring) and September (autumn). Avoid rainy-season leaves.
  • Plucking Method: Hand-plucked with precision, selecting mature leaves of one bud with two or three leaves
  • Plucking Year: High-quality raw material of the current season, fermented and pressed into cakes under standardized processing.

4. Production Process

Fresh leaves are withered, pan-fired, rolled, and sun-dried to produce Puer rough tea (maocha). The core wet-pile fermentation stage follows, with controlled temperature and humidity for 45–60 days to develop ripe Puers signature mellow flavor. After fermentation, the tea is ventilated, dried, and stored in a dry warehouse for 3 months to disperse unwanted odors. The tea cake is then softened with high-temperature steam and evenly pressed into shape using traditional stone weights. The pressed cake is slowly dried in shade at low temperature, then stored in a temperature- and humidity-controlled dry warehouse. The cake shape is regular, with moderate tightness, and supports continued long-term aging.

5. Recommended Brewing Guide

  • Tea-to-Water Ratio: 5g of pried cake pieces per 100ml gaiwan
  • Water Temperature: 95–100°C boiling water
  • Brewing Vessels: Purple clay teapot or white porcelain gaiwan (highlights the smooth, silky texture of ripe Puer)
  • Brewing Steps: Warm and rinse vessels → Double awakening rinses (5 seconds + 8 seconds quick rinses) → First infusion: 10 seconds; 2nd–3rd infusions: 12–15 seconds; middle infusions: add 10 seconds per steep. The tea can be infused more than 10 times.
  • Tasting Notes: Reddish-brown, bright, and clear liquor with pure, aged aroma; smooth, mellow, and soft on the palate.

6. Standardized Storage Guidelines

  • Sealing: Semi-sealed, breathable storage. Wrap in cotton paper or store in breathable tea jars to allow the tea to breathe” and support continued aging
  • Light: Store away from light; avoid strong light and direct sunlight at all times
  • Temperature: Constant 20–26°C; store at stable room temperature. Avoid high heat, stuffiness, freezing, and sudden temperature changes
  • Environment: Dry, well-ventilated space with 50–65% humidity. Keep in a clean, odor-free environment away from cooking smoke, perfume, and spices. The tea will improve and become more mellow with proper long-term storage.
